Detective Albert Mallen, 36, a fifteen-year veteran of the NJ State Police, became the first plain clothes trooper to be killed in the line of duty when he was shot during a drug raid on an apartment in Gloucester County on a Wednesday evening. A resident of Egg Harbor Township, Detective Mallen was assigned to the State Police Narcotics Bureau and was participating in the execution of a search warrant when his assailant, a 58-year-old drug dealer, suddenly fired a shotgun at close range. A Vietnam Marine veteran and an officer in the NJ National Guard, he left behind a wife, Peggy, and three children.
