Patrolman Dave Douglass, 34, was fatally shot by a burglar/arsonist on a Friday evening in a residential section of North Cape May. The officer was responding to a call to check a suspicious person. This suspect, a 52 year old unemployed restaurant worker, ultimately fired a single shot from a revolver that struck Officer Douglass in the neck. The killer was eventually apprehended in New York City. Officer Douglass had a total of twelve years of law enforcement experience and was highly respected by his peers.  He was survived by his wife, Debra, and three children.
