John F. Born was born in the Kensington section of Philadelphia in 1894 and moved with his family to Atlantic City circa 1910. John Born served with the United States Army, 29th Division, during World War I. John began his career with the Atlantic City Fire Department in 1927, spending most of his career with Engine Company #8 at Indiana and Baltic Avenues. He was promoted to Captain in 1937. On July 1, 1944, upon returning from fighting a house fire, he died in the Connecticut Avenue Fire House. Captain Born's death was attributed to "respiratory and circulatory collapse, inhaling smoke and fumes in a burning building."
